17-Hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and, in smaller amounts, by the ovaries and testes. It is an intermediate compound in the pathway that makes cortisol and other steroid hormones. This blood test measures the level of 17-OHP in the blood. This test is most often used to help screen for and evaluate congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a group of inherited conditions affecting hormone production, particularly the form caused by 21-hydroxylase enzyme deficiency. It is included in newborn screening programs and may also be used to help investigate symptoms related to excess androgen production in children and adults.
