Amylase is a test that measures the amount of amylase enzyme in the blood. Amylase is produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands and helps break down carbohydrates during digestion. Levels can rise when these organs are inflamed or damaged. This test is commonly used to help evaluate conditions affecting the pancreas, such as inflammation of the pancreas, and to investigate abdominal pain. It may also be used to look at problems with the salivary glands. It is sometimes ordered alongside a lipase test.
