An iron panel is a group of blood tests that measure how much iron is in your blood and how well your body transports and stores it. It typically includes serum iron (the amount of iron circulating in the blood), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC, a measure of the blood's capacity to bind and carry iron), unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), and transferrin saturation (the percentage of iron-binding capacity that is actually filled with iron). This panel is used to help evaluate the amount of iron in the body and how it is being transported. It can help assess conditions related to too little iron, such as iron-deficiency anemia, or too much iron, such as iron overload. It is often ordered when a person has symptoms like fatigue or when routine blood counts suggest a possible iron problem.
