Lipase is an enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas that helps the body digest fats. This blood test measures the amount of lipase in the blood. When the pancreas is inflamed or injured, lipase can leak into the bloodstream, raising blood levels above normal. This test is commonly used to help evaluate the pancreas, particularly when acute pancreatitis or another pancreatic condition is suspected. It may be ordered when a person has symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting, and it is sometimes used to monitor an existing pancreatic condition. Results are interpreted by a healthcare provider along with symptoms and other tests.
